Time-honored steamed stuffed buns in Wuhan

 There are a lot of traditional steamed stuffed bun restaurants in Wuhan, especially in Hankou; many of them are time-honored restaurants. Local foodies can enjoy delicious steamed stuffed buns right here and save themselves the hassle of a long trip to another city. 

 

1. Dehualou Restaurant 

As a well-known trademark of Hubei Province and a time-honored brand of Wuhan, Dehualou Restaurant has a history of 90 years. The "Great Three" of Dehualou, namely New Year's cakes, steamed stuffed buns, and dumplings, are famous snacks here in Wuhan.

Dehualou Restaurant was originally established by people from Tianjin; their steamed stuffed buns were similar to those of the famous Qing-Feng Steamed Dumpling Shop.

The buns of Dehualou are somewhat chewy, and they have a great texture and wheat fragrance. The technique for filling the buns with meat is based on a traditional technique, one that ensures that the bun is delicious and tender. The steamed stuffed buns are characterized by their thin wrapper, juicy fillings and great taste. The reason that steamed buns stuffed with braised pork and sauce are so popular is the excellent ingredients. All the sweet bean sauce and winter bamboo shoots are carefully selected.

2. Anhui-style steamed stuffed buns 

Hidden at the back of Shuanglong Boutique Clothing City, Hanzheng Street, is an Anhui-style steamed stuffed bun restaurant. Business here is booming; the restaurant sells about 5,000 buns a day.

The owner of the restaurant is from Anhui Province. His grandfather was the first in his family to try his hand at making steamed stuffed buns. One efficient practice-leavening the buns using a piece of long fermented dough and yeast-makes the buns softer and allows them to be produced faster.

The restaurant's specialty is steamed buns stuffed with fresh pork. One bite and you will have a mouthful of delicious meat and sauce. The vegetable buns, made of cabbage and mushrooms, are also popular.

3. Derunfu Yan's Shao-mai (siew mai) 

The 34-year-old Derunfu Yan's Shao-mai restaurant has always been successful; regular customers know that its large steamed stuffed buns are great.

The Yan family has been selling steamed stuffed buns for two generations. The dough for the buns is fermented. After the dough rises, some dietary alkali and other fillings are added in. They are then put into the fermenting box again. Finally, they are steamed for about 20 minutes.

The steamed stuffed buns here are quite large, with each one weighing about 175g. The steamed bun stuffed with braised pork and sauce is definitely worth trying. It is made using the same fillings as shao-mai, which contains diced pork and winter bamboo shoots.

4. Yuandatou steamed stuffed buns 

Every day, Yuandatou steamed stuffed buns restaurant has a long line of customers waiting to order its steamed stuffed buns. The restaurant, which has a history of about 30 years, has become a landmark on Guanghua Road, Hankou, and it is well-known all over Wuhan. Many visitors to Jiefang Park will drop in to buy some Yuandatou steamed stuffed buns on their way back home.

Most steamed stuffed bun restaurants specialize in steamed buns stuffed with fresh pork and steamed buns stuffed with braised pork and sauce, but this restaurant sells steamed buns with fish-flavored pork slices. The daughter of the owner was fond of fish-flavored pork slices, so he tried stuffing fish-flavored pork slices into the steamed buns. Unexpectedly, mixed with the fragrance of wheat, the buns tasted great. As soon as the new buns were launched, they became very popular among young people.
